Project Description
If you’re going for the leather uniform look, never mix chrome and brass. For example, if you have brass studs and belt buckle on your jacket, do not use a chrome belt buckle on your jeans. The same should go for cap badges - chrome or silver ones for outfits trimmed with chrome fastenings.
However, like all guidance, there are exceptions
One is your fly fastenings because they usually cannot be seen and manufacturers rarely offer you the choice of metal (zips or buttons). The same goes for buckles on boots. Usually these are chrome and they are difficult to change unless you are having custom boots made.
Another area that chrome and brass can be seen together is with a leatherman’s accessories. For example, many guys hang a chain dog leash from their belt. These are always chrome/stainless-steel and never brass in colour. If they were, it would like a garish gold chain hanging around their hip. The same is true for buckles and fastenings on wrist cuffs and colours - these are almost always chrome.
The overriding factor is consistency. A uniform leatherman’s outfit should work together to give a coherent look and not give the appearance it has come from a multitude of sources (which inevitability it has!). Many guys go with chrome since that’s more universal and easier to coordinate.
Guys that have gone down the Langlitz route will have many brass fittings on their leathers and will have probably gone for the Sam Browne from Langltiz too that coordinates beautifully. We would then recommend a brass cap badge to complete the look.
