Leathering Up
Have you still got your first piece of leather clothing?
I would guess there is a good chance that you have. For me it’s a leather jacket I bought with one of my first pay cheques. It’s terribly out of fashion now (big blouson style) but I keep it for its sentimental value.
I also keep it because I remember vividly how expensive it seemed at the time. Having seen it on the rack in the shop, I feel in love with it and made up my mind I was going to have it. It was also my first public declaration of my fondness for leather. I still remember the reaction of my friends when I turned up one evening the pub wearing the jacket. I was the first to wear such an item and I have to say it generated quite a bit of interest.
Needless to say, I have quite a few jackets now - all different styles (although all but two are black) and of course my leather wardrobe is more diverse with jeans, chaps, shirts, waistcoats…. You get the picture!
Building up your leather wardrobe takes time and of course, money. Guys new to the scene often struggle with getting quality gear at a reasonable price. Not only are there great items to be had from suppliers such as Leatherism, Leathermaniacs and JDL for Leather, there are bargains are to be had on the second-hand market - and we don’t mean just eBay.
Buying items from friends and others on the leather scene is a great source of second-hand items with the added advantage of being able to really see what you’re purchasing. More often than not, leathermen are always looking to trade-up. They’re always wanting to buy the next item on their shopping list. Therefore they are always looking for extra cash and many are open to the suggestion of selling older items.
At LeatherWest we are looking to support guys both as sellers and as buyers. We are happy to announce that we will be having a second-hand leather market in November where guys can come along, try on items and walk away with a great deal. Keep your eyes on the website for an update soon.
